RECYCLING
The average American throws away nearly four pounds of trash each day. Not only is this a waste of raw materials, and a source of pollution, but it is unnecessary. Much of the waste we generate can be diverted from the landfill if we simply reduce what we use or buy, reuse what we have, and recycle what we no longer need. |
The Windber Borough presently has two recycling location sites: |
- Windber Borough Municipal Building (Parking Lot)
1409 Somerset Avenue
Items Collected: Aluminun Cans Tin Cans Clear Glass Brown Glass Green Glass
- Windber Community Building (Parking Lot)
1604 Graham Avenue
Items Collected: Newspapers Plastics (Symbols 1 & 2) * plastic bottles, jugs and jars |
PREPARATION: Glass: Rinse, and remove lids and metal rings (labels may be left attached) Separated various colors into proper compartment in drop-off bin
Cans: Rinse all cans. Crush and remove labels if possible. Tops may be included (ex: soda/beer cans, soup cans, juice cans, etc)
Plastic: Rinse, and remove all lids and labels. (Lids are made of a different type of plastic, and therefor can not be recycled)
* Currently the county only has resources to recycle only the plastic with a number 1 or 2 on the bottle, jug, or jar. These numbers are located within chasing arrows in a triangular shape and are usually found on the bottoms of the bottles, jugs, or jars that contained food, beverages and personal care products (i.e shampoo bottles).

LEAF PICK - UP
Leaf pick-up and the composting of leaves is a service provided by the Borough of Windber, usually begins during the month of October and ends the last week in November. An advertisement will be posted announcing the dates for pick-up in the Johnstown Tribune Democrat, as well as the Somerset Daily American. Leaves are collected every Friday, within the specified dates between 8:00am and 3:00pm. All leaves must be bagged and placed the front curb lines (the borough truck will not go through alleys to pick up leaves). Residents are asked not to rake leaves into the streets because of the hazardous situations it could create. In order to have a successful clean up program, everyone’s cooperation is necessary.

SPRING CLEAN – UP
In an effort to improve the appearance of the community, and provide a service to Borough residents, Windber Borough endeavors to conduct an annual cleanup program on a curbside basis, usually in the spring. An advertisement will be posted announcing the week for clean – up in the Johnstown Tribune Democrat, as well as the Somerset Daily American. However, we encourage residents to utilize their refuse haulers throughout the year so that this material can be collected on a contractual basis rather than allowed to accumulate throughout the year.
